Product Formulation

This is the process to formulate the finished pharmaceutical product, by the mixing of all relevant ingredients, including the given API. The formulated product has the approved concentration of API for patient use. Formulation must take place under controlled conditions to ensure the efficacy of the product and avoid cross-contamination.

Oral dosage forms
Non-active ingredients can include sweeteners, flavourings and substitutions
Typical equipment for solid dosage: fluid bed dryers, blenders and granulators

Parenterals
Non-active ingredients can include water, glycerol and saline. Formulation tends to take place in special-purpose tanks in stages; dispensing, formulation, sterile filtration and storage

Inhalations
Non-active ingredients can include water and organic-based solvents. Formulation tends to take place as part of the filling process.

Topicals (creams and ointments)
Non-active ingredients can include water and organic-based solvents
Typical equipment: emulsifiers and homogenisers
