Clean Utilities

Water is a major commodity in the Life Science industry. It is used for many applications. Water is used for both washing and for formulation of the finished product. Purified water tends to be used for non-aseptic processes. WFI water must be used for aseptic processes.

Purified Water is pre-treated city water using filtration and deionisation. This can be performed chemically and/or using osmosis. Organic growth can be reduced using ultraviolet light. Temperature may be adjusted to maintain controlled conditions.

WFI water is produced by stills; vaporising and then condensing the water to remove any impurities. Purified water tends to be used as the supply water for these stills.

The water utility is distributed to the required points of use. It is recirculated to maintain the utility's controlled conditions. These distribution systems must be routinely sanitised.

Clean steam is another major commodity. It is primarily used as a sterilisation utility. Clean steam is produced by generators; vaporising water to remove any impurities. Purified water tends to be used as the supply water for these generators. The clean steam utility is distributed to the required points of use. Condensate must be removed from all low points in the distribution system. Pressure is monitored to ensure that controlled conditions are maintained.

Other clean utilities used are gases such as air, nitrogen and argon. These should be filtered at point of use for aseptic processes.
