Automation & IT

Automation is an integral part of equipment and processes. It spans from the high level EDM (Electronic Data Management), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and MES (Manufacturing Execution System) systems down to PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and field bus level. This is used to collect, transfer and process data, through a series and interfaces as well as within the equipment itself. Recipe and batch data must meet strict regulatory requirements such as FDA's 21 CFR Part 11. Access to critical data must therefore be controlled with the appropriate security measures such as access control systems, audit trail files, and data fraud prevention mechanisms.

Data handling to and from the equipment can range from simple manual data input and paper-print of batch reports to fully integrated data exchange systems. Highly automated systems enable continuous process monitoring, control and batch release, while simpler stand alone systems are often sufficient. DCS (Distributed Control System) systems are commonly used for their robustness and ability to cope with complex systems.
